Freedom Words

IF WE LOSE OUR FREEDOMS

If we lose our freedoms because we did not fight for them enough…
Who are going to tell those who will come and be   After us
What it was like to explore life with every sense and ability
In a never-ending exchange with the world
Back when we were still free to seek out our different paths
And all that living had to offer

Who will tell them
About the time when we could still choose how to live and die
Before many of us were forced to spend our last moments alone
By draconian decree from the powers that be

Who will let them know there used to be a time
When nearest and dearest could be with their beloveds in their darkest hour
And gather together to celebrate and share in their highest bliss

Who will tell them
About all the questions having to be asked before any true answers can be found
And about the excitement found in the fierce battles of ideas
Or what it was like when different voices of reason were allowed to be heard
Back in a time when our inner ones were strong enough to demand expression
And sincere enough to be respected   By ourselves and others

Who will be able to speak about the sights and sounds of our humanness
When we were still free to roam at large   And in ways our instincts told us
Or tell about when groups of people gathered closely together
Talking, singing, laughing.    Scheming, eating, dancing.
Whenever and in whatever way that took their fancy
And about a time when one person’s bare hands broke bread
Passed it on to another    And then from the other to the next
In the sacred act of sharing while honouring the sacrament of free will

Who will tell them   Those who will come after us
What it is like to follow the body’s desire to ramble and wander far and wide
And who will speak to them of past times
Of the gentle unfolding and opening up between people getting closer
Or the raucous spontaneous playfulness among strangers and friends
Back when life was filled with more than mistrust and fear
Who will tell them about the sweat tears and laughs we shared in our daily toil
Working side by side to create the future we were imagining
And were certain our children would have

Who will tell them how we lost what we took for granted
And not until it was too late
Understood it was our freedoms that were taken away
And who will teach them the lesson we never seemed to learn;
That even the smallest freedom is worth defending with the greatest effort
-lest we lose them all
For if we want to be truly and deeply alive and create a life worth dying for
We have to be free

…who is going to tell those who will come after us
About the open air and skies of every kind
And about the migrating birds in full flight across them
About the nuances of each season and day
And what nature taught us about the premises and promises of life

…who will tell them
About salty sun kissed skin and warm sandy beaches
The feel of the sea and the way it moves
And the freedom to go for an evening swim
Alone or in the company of others
Or anything else we chose to do – back then
And could do – back then
By our own free will

IT IS TIME

It is time
Now is the time
To desire    Declare    Demand

If not now
When?

When will we ever let the dogs loose
And mount the horse rearing and foaming at the mouth
When will we come to call on that which stirs in our deepest depths
Order it to come out and fight   To show its might
In our duel with life will we ever have the guts to risk everything
To find a living worth dying for

Will we ever gather the strength to face our biggest fears
And refuse to kneel for any threat
When will we dare to claim our birth right  –  Freedom
And feel the fiercest of all forces  –  Love
And then feed them! – the beasts that they are – at our own peril
Keeping our heads held high in honour to them always
Come what may

When will we rise to the hardest challenge
And remain upright whatever the circumstances
When will we come to serve the truth with all we have got
Despite it bringing pain and knowledge of the darkest kind
When will we learn to walk with danger on the way to the divine
And still find awe and wonder at every turn
When will we let our hearts claim victory
So we can finally live with purpose
More alive than ever
